Don’t Wait to be Invited

don't wait to be invitedDon’t wait to be invited.

Another mom I met only once before messaged me recently to say her child with an invisible disability was struggling and so was she. At the end of the message she did something so rare these days, it can only be chalked up to an act of bravery—she asked if she could come to my house.

Friends, don’t wait to be invited.

If you are struggling, reach out. If you are lonely, ask to join the playgroup. If you need help with reaching a goal, ask someone who has gone before you.

Sometimes we get an invitation neatly tucked in an envelope, but often times in life we have to draw up our own.

If you feel like no one cares about your struggles, it may be because no one knows. You can’t expect someone to throw you a lifeline if they don’t see you flailing.

What are you afraid of? The worst thing someone can respond with is “no”. If they do, brush yourself off because those people aren’t your people. Keep asking.

We are not meant to do this life alone. So, don’t. Our struggles and our joys are meant to be shared.

You get one life, don’t wait for an invitation, instead, invite yourself to live.

**Behind the post**
It struck me as brave for this mom to reach out, because I don’t think we do this enough anymore. I love the internet and the power of social media, but I wonder if the ease of online connections, makes the in-person ones a bit too scary at times. I remember being bored when I was little and my mom would tell me- don’t wait for someone to call you, call them. Gosh, what great advice that stretches into adulthood. Being a military spouse and having to make new friends every couple of years, I’m so thankful for this lesson. Whether it’s a need for a friend or a need for advice, I hope we don’t wait for an invitation.
