Milestones. As a special needs mom, I can tell you it’s really a loaded word. We not only notice the milestones that don’t come as quickly, sometimes we grieve them. Yet, when they do come, when our babies take that first step, when they say that first word, the joy is multiplied.

I’m a mom of three kids. I have a daughter who is typically developing, a son with Down syndrome and then my latest baby boy. He had a rough start to life. We found out at 14 weeks that something was off. It turned out he had a blockage in his urethra called Posterior Urethral Valves.

While I was in labor, doctors performed a fetal intervention surgery to remove excess fluid from his abdomen. He spent 10 days in the NICU where doctors performed several exploratory procedures and placed a nephrostomy tube. He also had clubbed feet.

Shortly after we went home he was placed in casts, and then at 4-weeks-old, an accident. His casts slipped and caused tissue necrosis. He still bears the scars today.

For everything we had been through, he had been through, it was absolutely devastating. The sores were gruesome. The whole thing was so unfair. My heart ached every time I saw his poor feet.

But then three weeks later, it happened. His first real smile.

I learned enough from my second child to not place too much value in milestones; to not compare another baby’s development to my own. But this milestone—it was a signature moment.

Because I knew he was okay. I knew after all of the trauma, he was going to be okay. And so were we.

Things weren’t easy after that. We still had multiple doctor appointments a week. But, there was a peace of mind.

You can add peace of mind into your own parenting journey with Signature Care baby diapers. You shouldn’t have to choose between quality and value, and with Signature Care diapers you don’t have to. They are inexpensive, offer up to 12-hours of leak protection, a wetness indicator line and are breathable for your baby. There’s even a 100% money-back guarantee.

Milestones don’t have to be shiny to be worthy, just like diapers don’t have to be expensive to be good.

I don’t have an image of his very first smile, but I will never forget the way it made me feel.

Sometimes we put too much emphasis on the social media worthy milestones. Of course, we have to be aware of developmental norms, however, sometimes us parents can get caught up in comparing our baby’s timeline to our friend’s. But really, the signature moments that matter most, are the ones that are captured in our hearts.
