You are doing a great work, do not come down.
This is a paraphrased word from the Old Testament book, Nehemiah. The original verse hangs above my bedroom dresser. All of my yes’s and no’s, are supposed to go through this verse. Does this opportunity fit in with the life I feel God wants me to build? But there is one work I never question, it is the extra effort that goes into parenting my child with a disability.
So, I say this to you and to me: You are doing a great work, do not come down.
I see you attending conferences to know how to best serve your child, I see you researching for weeks before their next IEP meeting, I see you participating in advocacy efforts to make a change for your child and mine.
You are doing a great work, do not come down.
I see you feeling tired and torn. I know guilt creeps in because of time management concerns. I know the loss you’ve experienced when you take a stand those close to you just don’t get. Your priorities have changed, along with your calendar and the circles you keep.
You are doing a great work, do not come down.
Because our children are one of our greatest works. They have been entrusted to us, with their unique needs. Take a break when you need to, but don’t ever question your mission. This work can be difficult and exhausting and yet it is rewarding because we know it is a part of the big picture vision God has for our lives.
Dear Friend, remember this: Your calling is great. You are doing a great work, do not come down.
